Beneath the Starry Sky
- Perseid Showers -

For families and children, 5 years and above
Saturday, August 14, 8-10 pm
M: $10/person, $35 maximum
per family / NM: $13/person, maximum $47 per family.
Pre-registration and pre-payment required.
Join us for the Greatest Show Above Earth! Every year at this time, the Perseid Meteor Showers dazzle observers with shooting stars. Hands-on activities help you learn about about this amazing phenomenon. We will then go outside in the field and use telescopes to scan the night sky for the moon, stars and planets. As an added treat, we will make s’mores and tell stories around the campfire. Please dress for the weather and bring insect repellant

Volksmarch 2010!

Sunday, November 7
$3M/$5NM for ages 2yrs. and over

A German word for “People’s Walk,” a Volksmarch is a leisurely walk through a scenic or historic area over a pre-determined trail. Join us for an SSNSC version and explore the woodlands around the Science Center and/or Jacobs Pond. Families, seniors, groups of friends or individuals will enjoy exercising, socializing and learning about the area. Choose your arrival time, the length of your trail, set your own pace and you’re good to go! Snacks and drinks will be provided, along with a scavenger hunt to guide you along. Prizes will be
awarded upon completion of the walk! Please allow 2.5 hrs. to complete both trails by 3pm when the center will close. Pre-registration requested. Walk-ins welcome.

Fairies of the Forest
For children ages 2 and up
1:00-2:30pm
Saturday, September 25
$12M/$15NM per child/adult pair
$5 per additional child

Fairies live in all kinds of places, but they like the forest best. We’ll look for their hidden houses and then build some to take home. We will also make some little fairy folk to live in them. Come in costume if you like. Pre-registration and pre-payment required.

Halloween Howl

Saturday, October 30

It’s Halloween time at the Science Center! Join us for some “Ghoulish Glee” and a not too scary night of family fun. Activities include pumpkin carving, crafts, a live animal presentation, and a night walk in the woods. Wear a costume if you would like and bring a pumpkin to carve. Snacks will be available for sale. Check the website, www.ssnsc.org, for final details,
additions to the program and cost.

Cranberry Day
10:00am-2:00pm ~ Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11
Adults $5M/7NM, children $3M/5NM

Cranberry juice, “Cranraisins”, and cranberry bread – we love to eat cranberries! Where do they come from? They bounce, float and grow in bogs, right here in Southeastern MA! Join us to learn all about this delicious and nutritious fruit, its importance as food and medicines to
early Native Americans and Colonists, and how it is used today. Enjoy crafts, hands-on activities and even take home sample recipes – something for everyone! This is a drop-in event. No pre-registration or pre-payment required!

Flying Wild Festival

Bye, bye, birdies! Join us to celebrate the incredible and mysterious journey that many birds take at this time of year. How do they do it? Enjoy games, crafts, demonstrations, exhibits and trail walks as you become a bird for an afternoon and learn about patterns of migration,
obstacles along the way, marvelous adaptations, and how birds behave and communicate. Fun for the whole family!

Early Peoples Along the North River
Saturday, October 2 ~11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Drop in and enjoy a special day celebrating Early American life along the North River. Explore an expanded display of Native American artifacts along with our permanent exhibit of early life along the North River.  Children's activities will include storytelling, Native American games and sampling foods of long ago.

Family Archaeology Day
Columbus Day - Monday, October 11 ~11:00 am-2:00 pm

Join us for a fun hands-on mock archaeological dig.  Visitors will use special tools to excavate fragments of the past and try to piece them together. Come and see what you will find. Visit our museums Native American exhibit to view our permanent collection of early American artifacts.
Suitable for children of all ages accompanied by adults.

 

 

Feed the Animals

Wednesdays at 3:00pm and Saturdays at 10:00am.
FREE with admission. 

Pre-registration not required.

Come watch a naturalist feed the animals at the Nature Center.  Learn more about what some turtles eat, where some amphibians live, and other interesting things about the animals in the EcoZone.

Please note: Many of the animals in the EcoZone are wild and non-releasable; therefore guests will not be able to feed or pet the animals themselves.
